IIASA Young Scientists Summer Program 2022: Applications are Open Now
IIASA was established in October 1972, during the Cold War, at the initiative of the Soviet Union and the United States to promote scientific cooperation between East and West. Today it is an international scientific institute that conducts research into the critical issues of global environmental, economic, technological, and social change. It also offers YSSP, a summer program for PhD students to undertake a scientific project on a topic related to the IIASA research agenda.

World's Most Influential Climate Scientist Works in Research Institute Near Vienna

South African to Lead Global Research Institute IIASA in Laxenburg near Vienna
Vice Chancellor of South Africa’s University of KwaZulu-Natal, Dr Albert S. van Jaarsveld, has been appointed as Director General and CEO of the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA). Dr. Albert van Jaarsveld has become the eleventh Director General of IIASA on 1 October 2018. He succeeds outgoing Director General Professor Pavel Kabat who became the first Chief Scientist of the United Nation’s World Meteorological Organization (WMO).

Vienna Energy Forum 2018: Sustainable Energy Provision as a Key to Tackling Poverty
The sixth Vienna Energy Forum 2018 was held from 14 to 16 May, 2018, at the Vienna International Centre (VIC) and the Hofburg Imperial Palace. It was attended by over 1,800 participants from 130 countries, including prime ministers, ministers, high-level government officials, permanent mission representatives, chairs of the regional groups, donors, as well as representatives of the EU, the private sector and development finance institutions.

Top Energy Events Put Vienna in the Focus of the Global Clean Energy Economy

14,000 International Scientists Meet in Vienna to Discuss Earth-related Topics
The largest geosciences meeting in Europe will take place from 8 to 13 April in the Austria Center Vienna (ACV). The EGU (European Geosciences Union) 2018 General Assembly brings together more than 14,000 geoscientists from all over the world into one meeting covering all disciplines of the Earth, planetary and space sciences. This year, for the first time, the EGU is organising an event for the wider public in Vienna.

OECD's Angel Gurría and IIASA Agree to Tackle Critical Global Problems Facing Humanity
OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) Secretary-General Angel Gurira led a high-level OECD delegation to visit IIASA. The Secretary-General gave a special lecture titled "Better Policies to meet the Systemic Challenges of the 21st Century" at the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research, which was followed by the signing of an OECD-IIASA Memorandum of Understanding. The aim of the agreement is to jointly shape and develop innovative policies by applying systems thinking to the critical global issues facing humanity.

IIASA Builds Bridge through Science with Israel
The Laxenburg based international research organization IIASA (International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis) has recently announced that Israel has become its newest member country. Israel joins 24 other countries whose National Member Organization’s representatives constitute the IIASA Governing Council. Israel has established the Israel Committee for IIASA - made up of representatives from Israeli universities, government ministries, and the public - to represent the Israeli membership of IIASA.

The United Nations Celebrate 35 Years in Vienna
The United Nations moved into the VIC Vienna International Centre 35 years ago. The VIC was officially opened on 23 August 1979 when it was handed over to the United Nations and the International Atomic Energy Agency. Commonly known locally as 'UNO City', it has been rented to the organizations for 99 years at a symbolic rate of 1 Austrian schilling (7 euro cents) annually.
