There was great jubilation and relief on Wednesday evening at the United Nations headquarters in New York: In a closely contested vote by the UN General Assembly, Austria secured one of the coveted non-permanent seats on the UN Security Council for the 2027–2028 term. In the secret ballot, the Alpine republic surprisingly and decisively outpaced its neighbor Germany, thereby joining the world’s most powerful security body for the fourth time starting next year.

Being elected requires a two-thirds majority vote from the United Nations General Assembly, and therefore, the federal government designated special envoys to advocate for Austria.

Austria and European Security: Extended Mandate for EU Mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina
