After the Austrian Foreign Ministry had declared a Russian diplomat an undesirable person in connection with accusations of espionage, Russia has now reacted by deporting an Austrian diplomat.

Based on the principle of reciprocity, a diplomat from the Austrian Embassy in Russia was declared persona non grata as a countermeasure, according to the Moscow Foreign Ministry. This statement was subsequently confirmed at the Austrian Embassy in Moscow.
Previously, Austria's ambassador in Moscow, Johannes Eigner, had been appointed to the ministry.
The Russian Foreign Ministry stated:
"The ambassador was met with strong protest in connection with the unfounded decision of the Austrian side regarding the withdrawal of a diplomat's accreditation and the demand to leave Austria." …
