In December, the new “Westbahn” (Western Railway) will start competing with the ÖBB (Austrian state railways) which are allegedly being privileged by the government.

The Westbahn company of Strabag’s CEO Hans-Peter Haselsteiner considers itself at a disadvantage because the state competitor receives € 6.3bn in subsidies for "public services". Payments will be effected during the next ten years following the promise by the ÖBB to operate also non-profitable routes. Compensation for free-riding students is also included in the payment.
