Wholesale Prices Continue Upward Trend

Wholesale price index in September 2011: +6.4% against September 2010, +0.6% against August 2011. Main drivers were coffee and oil products.

As reported by Statistics Austria the index of wholesale prices, WPI 2010, amounted to 108.1 (preliminary value) in September 2011 and has increased by 0.6% against August 2011. Compared to September 2010 the wholesale prices rose by 6.4%, after 6.9% in August 2011.

Against August, the groups “other mineral oil products” (+4.0%), “gasoline and diesel” (+3.4%), “sugar, confectionary and bakery products” (+1.8%) and “fertilizers and agrochemical products” (+1.8%) recorded price increases. The highest drops were registered for TV sets, radios and DVD players (-4.8%), fruits, vegetables and potatoes (-4.3%) and waste and recycling materials (-2.5%).

Compared to September 2010, wholesale prices of coffee, tea, cocoa and spices rose by 22.1%.. Prices of other mineral oil products went up by 21.5%. Other major upward tendencies were observed for gasoline and diesel (+21.2%), fertilizers and agrochemical products (+20.3%), technical grade chemicals (+17.9%), watches and jewelry (+12.5%) and living animals (+12.3%). Significant price drops were observed for fruits, vegetables and potatoes (-19.4%), devices of information and communication technology (-17.1%), flowers and plants (-9.8%), TV sets, radios and DVD players (-6.8%) and photographic and optical products (-6.3%).
