The Slovak airport Bratislava should be privatized. Slovakia is looking for a strategic partner, who operated the airport for 30 years. VIA´s CEO Julian Jäger wants to submit an offer to the Slovak airport for synergetic reasons. “We are interested and we will apply for the purchase. The tender process is being prepared in Slovakia and we are analyzing the potentials.”

Jäger expects considerable synergetic effects. Anyway, the distance between the two airports is only 50km. Since 2009, when the airline SkyEurope went bankrupt, the Slovak airport faces serious problems. Operating losses and a low passenger frequency are the main problems.

The same situation is being observed at the second biggest Slovak airport in Kosice. VIA´s stake in Airport Kosice is 66%.Jäger: “It is difficult to generate growth in Kosice, but the cost structure is in a good condition.”

The two other airport subsidiaries in Malta and the German Friedrichshafen are performing well. Jäger underlined that VIA currently has no other expansion plans than in Bratislava.

For 2011, VIA expects 20.7m passengers, which is a growth by 5% against 2010. The growth is being driven by the higher passenger number at Air Berlin, Niki and the low-cost carriers.
