Total costs of missing the target for the period 2008 to 2012 will amount to not less than € 800m. € 450m have already been spent on the purchase of certificates.

In a study on the energy sector, the consulting company A.T. Kearney estimated that Austria will have to pay € 800m for missing the targets stipulated in the Kyoto protocol.
