The economic council initiated by Vice-Chancellor Michael Spindelegger (ÖVP) was held for the first time in Vienna today. Leading representatives from politics and business exchanged their views and ideas. They conferred on measures for strengthening the Austrian economy and securing jobs.

Today’s participants from the business side were, among others, Gerhard Roiss (OMV), Markus Beyrer (ÖIAG), Güther Apfalter (Magna Steyr), Wolfgang Eder (voestalpine), Günter Geyer (VIG), Wolfgang Anzengruber (Verbund) and Christian Kern (ÖBB). Ewald Nowotny (National Bank) and Helmut Ettl (Financial Market Authority) also attended the meeting.

The participating members of the government later spoke about a constructive beginning of the council. Chancellor Werner Faymann (SPÖ) called it a successful attempt of promoting dialogue with representatives of leading Austrian companies. He assured that suggestions from this meeting would be incorporated into the government program.

The topics of today’s meeting were the general economic situation, public finances, employment and Austria’s competitiveness as a business location. Vice-Chancellor Spindelegger pointed at the common initiative for internationalization, the evaluation of the “brand Austria” and the country’s financial center.

From now on the council will come together three to four times a year and exchange views on specific issues. The main topics at the next meeting will be education and training.
