Despite a declining savings rate, households remain the most important provider of capital to domestic banks.

According to latest data of the Austrian National Bank (OeNB), domestic households controlled a total fortune of € 471bn as of June 2011. Debt amounted to € 163bn, so that Austrians’ net assets stood at € 308bn. This figure has not changed significantly since the end of 2009; the OeNB spoke of a stable development.
