The feared loss of the job is one of the most important reasons, says a survey by the Chamber of Labor.

The quota of staff away sick declined from 4.8% in 1980 to 3.5% in 2010. The main reason is the fact that about 40% of the employees do not stay at home in case of an illness. 15% of them fear to be laid-off otherwise. 36% think that the workload would not be done otherwise and 59% do not want to leave their colleagues alone.
