Against the general trend, Austria's economy is increasingly investing in research and know-how.

In 2009, an increase of 0.6% (compared with 2008) in expenditure for research and development (R&D) was recorded by Austrian companies. This was clearly contrary to the general trend: globally considered, expenditure fell by 3.5 % in the yearly comparison. Germany reduced its investment expenditure by 3.0%.
