Poverty: Romanian and Bulgarian Citizens Most Endangered

Regarding the poverty rate, Bulgaria, Romania, Spain, Greece and Lithuania are significantly above the EU average.

In total, 22.3% of the Bulgarian population is at risk of poverty. Among the EU member countries, Bulgaria ranks first and followed by Romania (22.2%). The least threatened countries are the Czech Republic (9.8%), the Netherlands (11.0%) and Austria (12.6%). In total, 84 million EU citizens are threatened by poverty. This corresponds to 17% of the population.
