In Austria, only 82 of 787 banks have to pay bank taxes. Above all, the Raiffeisen sector and the Volksbanken sector are excluded.

At the beginning of 2011, the Austrian government introduced bank taxes. Per year, the tax intake should reach € 500m. This year, the bank tax was increased up to € 625m. Finance Minister Maria Fekter justified this step with the bail-out of VBAG.
