Car Registrations Rising Considerably

January 2011: New passenger car registrations in Austria increased by 22.5%.

The overall positive development of 2010 continued in January 2011. According to Statistics Austria a total of 25 584 new passenger cars were registered, by 22.5% more than in January 2010. This considerable increase resulted, above all, from high-performance vehicles: Passenger cars in the class of 68 to 89 kW showed an increase of 41.1%, those above 89 kW increased by 39.2%. The increase of diesel-driven passenger cars (share: 58.6%) was significantly higher (+33.5%) than that of petrol-driven cars (incl. flex-fuel (E85) vehicles; share: 40.7%; +9.5%).

In January 2011, the majority of the TOP 10 brands of new passenger cars recorded positive results: Opel (+64.2%), Hyundai (+61.7%), BMW (incl. Mini; +43.5%), Peugeot (+31.8%), Renault (incl. Dacia; +30.2%), Seat (+27.7%), VW (+19.9%) and Skoda (+11.9%). Only Audi (-6.9%) faced decreases.

Within the Top 10 models of passenger cars, Opel Meriva (+224.9%), VW Sharan (+156.4%), Skoda Fabia (+33.8%), Opel Astra (+28.0%), Skoda Octavia (+18.7%), Renault Megane (+14.1%) and VW Golf (+8.0%) showed a positive outcome while models like VW Polo (-32.1%), Audi A4 (-15.3%) and Seat Ibiza (-6.7%) decreased

A total of 29 674 new motor vehicles were registered in January 2011, 22.5% more than in January 2010 and 19.7% more than in December 2010. Registrations of new passenger cars (25 584 units) increased by 22.5% as well.

Increases were also recorded for lorries and articulated lorries (+36.7% and 55.9%). Registrations of agricultural and forestry tractors started with a decrease (-7.9%).

The two-wheelers showed positive results for lightweight motorcycles (+38.0%) and scooters (+0.2%) but a negative outcome for motorcycles (-25.0%).
