The electricity industry could make major contributions to the energy strategy of Austria with an innovation and investment program, explained the president of Energy Austria, Wolfgang Anzengruber.

Austria's electricity industry claims to have already started with the investments in the future. "The current investment test of the electricity industry shows an increase in investments of an average of 20% annually since 2006," said Anzengruber. The electricity industry invested € 1.3bn in 2008, and in 2009 the figure was already € 1.6bn. Investments at this level should continue until 2020. "By 2020, the Austrian electricity industry will have invested over € 2.0bn yearly in Austria's economy, which will create additional demand effects for up to another billion", said the secretary general of Energy Austria, Barbara Schmidt. In the crisis years 2008 and 2009, investments of the electricity industry secured around 28,000 jobs in Austria and led to a production effect of € 5.6bn, of which € 3.6bn were attributable to the domestic value creation.

The most important measure for the future will be to improve the efficiency of energy use in Austria. Anzengruber said: "With the technology currently available, the energy consumption of Austria could be halved to about 150 billion kilowatt hours by 2050."
