Strabag Builds EUR 37 Million Power Plant in Switzerland

Strabag AG is building the Rhone Oberwald run-of-the-river hydroelectric plant in the Swiss canton of Valais. The contract value of € 37 million comprises the construction of the necessary tunnels, galleries and underground chambers.

“We are delivering the complete construction works for this 14 MW power station, which means everything except the electromechanical components”, says Stefan Wyss, the project’s technical manager.

The plant is to be handed over to Valais utility company FMV SA by September 2017.

  • Tunnelling contract worth € 37 million (CHF 38 million)
  • Power plant with installed capacity of 14 MW to be completed by September 2017

The tunnels and galleries will be excavated in the Aarmassif of the Swiss Alps through boring and blasting.

As parts of the construction site are situated at 1,750 m above sea level, work at higher elevations can only take place for a few months during the year.
