Alexander Lukashenko has been President of Belarus since 1994.

His critics, such as Germany's late Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle, have repeatedly described him as "Europe's last dictator".

In the presidential elections for his fourth term in office in 2010, there were major demonstrations against the government, but these were brutally suppressed.
