In the second half of 2011 and in the first half of 2012, foreign banks withdrew about € 55bn from the region.

According to BIS (Bank of International Settlements), West European banks continue the deleveraging in the CESEE region. This comes at 4.0% of GDP of the CESEE countries, the Vienna Initiative states. Foreign banks are dominating the banking industry in the CESEE region.
