Under this year’s theme, “How Europe Wins,” the Tyrolean mountain village of Alpbach has once again become the epicenter of the European debate on the future. At the opening of the “Conference Days,” Forum President Othmar Karas struck a forceful tone: Europe does not lack insight, but rather has a glaring weakness in implementation. He issued a stark warning against social and political “sleepwalkers” who, in the wake of the crises of recent years, hope for a simple return to business as usual or would even prefer to pursue nationalist experiments. Alpbach's message is clear: Europe’s success depends on collective action.
