Stress tests - according to Cernko, Austrian Banks in the bottom third

Referring to speculation according to which Austrian banks with their relatively low equity ratio should not perform that well, Bank Austria CEO Willibald Cernko said "If one considers capital only, they will be at the top of the bottom third."

"But since they are all “traditional” banks, with mainly customer oriented business, they do not need more capital."

One must look closely at the numbers and business models to differentiate. Otherwise one could get the impression that Austria is falling behind.

Experts evaluate the amount of loans in some Eastern European countries as problematic. The former central banker Josef Christl recognizes issues for some other candidates: "Some Spanish Cajas have a very high real estate exposure, Greek banks and German regional banks could also get into trouble."
