Romania: Pensions Increased by 3.4 %

By a year-on-year basis, pensions in Romania increased in the forth quarter of 2012 by 3.4 % coming up to 786 lei. Out of the total number of pensioniers, 86.1 % receive benefits from the state social insurance.

In the fourth quarter of 2012, the average number of pensioners was 5455 thousands persons, decreasing with 100 thousands persons as against the same quarter of the previous year and with 14 thousands persons as against the third quarter of 2012. The average monthly pension was, in the fourth quarter of 2012, 786 lei, increasing with 3.4% as against the same quarter of the previous year and with 1.9% as against the third quarter of 2012.

Social insurance pensioners represented the majority ( 99.9%) of the total number of pensioners.  State social insurance pensioners represented 86.1% out of the total insurance pensioners.  Average state monthly pension was 779 lei, in the fourth quarter of 2012, with big differencies in the teritorial area (according to NUTS 3) , the gap between the minimum and maximum value being over 350 de lei (624 lei în Giurgiu as against 983 lei in Bucharest).

By categories of pensions, the number of social insurance pensioners was represented mainly (72.2%) by the number old age pensioners.  The anticipated and partial anticipated old age categories of pensioners represented 2.2%.

The real pension index for the fourth quarter of 2012, as against previous quarter, calculated as the ratio between the nominal pension index and the consum prices index, was 100.5%.

The total number of beneficiaries of EGO no 6/2009 regarding the minimum guaranteed social pension (social indemnity) in the fourth quarter of 2012, was 603.7 thousands persons, of which:  424.5 thousands persons from state social insurance system, representing 9.0% out of the total pensioners of this category; 179.2 thousands persons from the former system of farmers representing 30.0% out of the total pensioners of this category.
