Less mergers and acquisitions (M&A) in Austria

247 mergers and acquisitions in 2009, value of €11b, two-thirds were cross-border.

In the record year 2007 in Austria, there were 455 M&A. Ever since M&A are decreasing: Last year, with 247 transactions the lowest number since 1999 (2008: 314) was registered. The total transaction value fell by 16.6 percent to €11.03b (from €13.22b), according to a study by the ACS Acquisition Services of Vienna, published in "Bank-Archiv" of the “Bankwissenschaftlichen Gesellschaft”.

166 of the 247 of last year’s transaction were of an international nexus. Most cross-border M & A transactions were concluded with Germany (65), followed by the USA (21), Switzerland (13), Italy (9) and France (5).

The industry with the largest transactions was the retail industry (22). Food production and processing registered 15 transactions the only sector surpassing last year’s numbers all other industries registered significantly lower levels. In the software / data technology area, there were 15 transactions, 14 in other services, 13 at both the real estate and automotive / supplier industry.
