The Austrian economy should, according to the President of WKO, focus export growth in third countries and distant markets.

“Despite of economically difficult times, domestic export enterprises were able to gain business from January to May. This plus – even if it is only a small plus – of 1.1 percent shows that the chosen path is the right one and the continuation of the internationalization offensive came at the right time,” Christoph Leitl, President of the Austrian Chamber of Commerce (WKO), emphasized when the recent export figures were published.

With the new internationalization offensive, a greater upswing for exports should be granted and the number of Austrian exporters increased while the focus is put even more on third countries and distant markets now. Thus, in the first five months of this year, exports in third countries could be increased further by 5.2 percent. “We have to further strengthen and accelerate this trend,” Leitl said. “With the strategic orientation of the internationalization offensive we are on target.”

The only downer is still the development withing the classical export destinations withing Europe. However, because of the weak economic growth in the main export countries like Italy, Germany and the UK, the hands of domestic exporters are still tied. Yet Leitl remains optimistic for the whole year of 2013. “Our exporters can score with innovative products. Domestic products from milk to high tech see a great global demand. Our target is still a new record in exports – also and especially this year.”
