IS Returnees to Austria - No Consular Protection Abroad

Austria adopted an autonomous consular law whereby consular protection abroad is regulated in a separate law for the first time and IS returnees can be denied consular protection.

The Austrian National Council passed the consular law presented by the government with the votes of the ÖVP, the FPÖ and the NEOS without preliminary consultations in the Foreign Policy Committee.

This is the first time that the Austrian diplomatic missions and consular protection abroad have been regulated in a separate law.
