General Government Expenditure by Function (COFOG) 2009: Increases in Social Expenditure

In 2009, public finances in Austria were affected by the economic and financial crisis, leading to an increase in expenditure of 3.9%. Statistics Austria's most recent data show a 6% increase of social expenditure in the year 2009.

Most of the general government's expenditure in 2009 fell on "Social protection" (€59.8 bn, 41.7% of overall expenditure), "Health" (€ 22.5 bn; 15.7%), and "General public services" (€ 18.8 bn; 13.1%). 11.1% of total expenditure was spent on "Education" and 9.5% on "Economic affairs". The remaining expenditure was spent within the other COFOG-divisions.
