According to the Austrian E-Control authority, the Austrian economy needs massive investments in the power grid. The upgrade to “smart grids” would be essential.

Over the next eight years, the Austrian energy industry will have to make investments of € 8.0bn in order to upgrade the domestic power grid. The power grid should become “smart grids”. Also the access to renewable energy sources will cause costs, Martin Graf at E-Control says.
Until now, “smart grid” projects in Austria did not lead to substantial cost increases.…
