Together with Russia, Bulgaria stopped the controversial construction of a nuclear power plant in Belene close to the Danube.

After the failed referendum in January, the parlament of Sofia voted against the building of a second nuclear power plant. 114 congressmen voted against the construction while 40 votes were cast in favor. The socialist party, however, stated they wanted to resume the project in case they should win the coming elections.
