Austrian commercial aviation - 2009 a difficult year

In 2009 commercial aviation registered 22,6m passengers (including transit), 2.1m less passengers (8.5 per cent) compared to 2008. Airfreight decreased by 2.5 per cent or 209,200.3 tonnes while air mail also declined by 10.1 per cent.

83 per cent travelled to European countries, of which 79 per cent travelled within the EU-27 member states. The most important destinations for line operations were London, Frankfurt Zurich, Berlin and Paris, where 2m passengers travelled to.

The most frequent destinations for chartered flights were Antalya with 0.4m passengers followed by Hurghada, London, Monastir and Rhodos.

Airport Vienna

Three of four flights (76.6 per cent), four of five (79.9 per cent) passengers, 97 per cent of air freight (arriving and departing transit freight) and almost 100 per cent of air mail were allotted to the airport in Vienna. At the same time 30 per cent of the 9 million passengers departing from Vienna were „transit passengers“.

81 airlines were operating regular service flights at Airport Vienna during 2009. On average every 2 minutes an aircraft took off or landed in Vienna-Schwechat during 2009.
