About 5% more than in 2010 will likely be spent on research in 2011, with a total expenditure of around € 8.3bn. Particularly gratifying, according to the FFG (Forschungsförderungsgesellschaft, Research Promotion Company), is the increase in corporate spending with a growth of 5.9%.

"Our strategy has worked: with a set of measures specifically designed for small and medium enterprises, we have not only been able to prevent a drop in research activities, but also to give a huge boost to the economy in order to start again properly",  say FFG managers.

The strategy to broaden the research base in Austria had been absorbed, said FFG manager Henrietta Egerth: "We have been able to increase significantly the number of research-active companies in recent years. The share of research newcomers, i.e. applicants who submit a project to the FFG for the first time, was well above one third in recent years." FFG manager Klaus Pseiner considers as particularly effective measures those instruments that strengthen the cooperation between science and industry, and therefore know-how and technology transfer.
