The opposition criticises the e-mail from Interior Minister Herbert Kickl (ÖVP), which is referred to as a "Gleichschaltungs" e-mail and would be a direct attack on democracy, freedom of opinion and freedom of the press.

According to a press release of the SPÖ, "The e-mail of the Minister of the Interior to the press offices of the police directorates, which has become publicly known, is to be seen solely as a direct attempt by the Minister of the Interior Herbert Kickl to control the media, to restrict freedom of the press and freedom of expression and to weaken democracy."
